  1. I haven’t had time to read all the information yet but I know it will be helpful in showing that polygamy is not healthy for women or children.

Wow!!! The information on the online petition is mostly bullshit! I have no idea how you can be trying to help innocent people when your information is false. I guess it takes all kinds to make a world.

To Maggie70–The Stop! Polygamy in Canada petition online is not a product of Stop Polygamy in Canada. It is written by a different group. However, I would like you to explain just exactly what is false about it. As far as I can see and from seven years research experience, the information is not false. If you can prove otherwise, please do so.

From the outside looking in, I can’t believe we are hearing this case in Canada at all. This is so wrong on so many levels, after reading and learning about the FLDS my soul hurts for these women and children. How can we as a nation close our eyes to child sexual torture? Child prostitution and trafficking of under age girls. In my opinion if the law was changed it would add to their power. Anyone could say, see now I have a licence to have as many of you as I want, and even the government tells me I’m right!! How horrid
Nancy-thank you for updateing and helping us, that did not know.

        Dear montva,

Thank you for your kind comment. However, I cannot and will not take all the credit for what is now happening in BC’s courts. Stop Polygamy in Canada is a recognized “international group” for the purposes of this case. We have four pro bono lawyers who are doing a terrific job for us in the court room. It takes a team of people to put together what is happening here. In spite of the nay-sayers, I’m confident our polygamy law will be found constitutional.

Yes, Catherine, that is fine! Please remember that I am willing to go out and speak to groups that want to know more about how and why s.293 is and should be deemed constitutional by this court. Also, we are a women and children’s rights group scratching with bloody fingernails to continue with this quest. If you have any suggestions as to how we can raise funds to pay expenses while I attend the trial; AND, if this case goes further up the judicial ladder, it is going to start costing money for the attorneys. They are not charging us a dime for this phase of the case. We have succeeded with all the ground work; now begins the “grunt” work. Bless you, for your comments. With the support of good people like you, we will succeed with this.

  4. Polygamy is Unhealthy for Society
If the courts were to examine polygamy through the lens of psychology they might very well conclude that polygamy is NOT a constitutional religious right. Psychologists inform us that a symbiotic relationship is one that is unhealthy. Polygamy and symbiosis go hand in hand. While on the surface the relationship may appear as beneficial, non-harming and grounded in religion, underneath the façade are individuals who participate for unhealthy reasons most of which are rooted in fear that very often escalate into various forms and degrees of abuse. The risks associated with any symbiotic relationship are well documented. By allowing polygamy to exist, we open the door to all that goes against our principals. Time for the physiologists to weigh in!

  7. As Edmund Burke said, ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph [of evil] is for good men [or women] to do nothing.’ Hitler might have said that. He surely believed that the Jewish Problem had not been properly addressed and believed himself to be doing the right thing to finally address the problem.

  8. You would ban any historical writing by or about the legacy of the LDS,
whether by Polygamous Mormons or not? We are talking about shutting down College Departments, seizing the intellectual property of many thousands of people, and many other consequences which you have not yet imagined. I think there is a lot of panic over this in Canada and very little concern for human rights.

Polygamy will increase in future generations instead of going into the decline or stable numbers which would otherwise occur naturally.

You are way out to lunch, Kathleen. No one said anything about banning historical writings of the LDS or any other religious entity. White-washing one’s history, however, does have its problems. Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of ALL Mormonism started polygamy and the mainstream LDS just want to turn their heads the other way after all, didn’t their “prophet” say, “There is no such thing as a Fundamentalist Mormon” emphasis on “thing”?

Stop this disgusting self-serving action enslaving children from this horrible sexual abuse that has been indoctrinated in them from an early age to accept the word of “Joseph Smith”. They are led to believe they will not attain celestial designation if they do not follow the so-called rules and words of the spiritual leaders who have misinterpreted this vile dictate. Polygamy was initially allowed in the Mormon faith to look after women and children where women were widowed and had children to look after. In those early days women were not self sufficient as is possible today so where is there a societal need for this practice today. Children cannot make decisions when they have been brainwashed in a harmful aspect of this religion or any other for that matter until they have been exposed to other aspects of society or religions. They become afraid of so called ‘afterlife” consequences that it impedes their rationale. Women are just as vulnerable but at least they can escape from this. However, they are held captive psychologically by these abusers for fear of losing their children. I would rather my taxes are funded to social agencies to take care of these women and children than to their church and husbands. There is so much abuse of power physically and psychologically in the guise of religion and so called religious freedoms that has been going on since time began. It is time to put a stop to this insanity.

      Hello Marylou,

Your commentary is very commendable except for one glaring error. Early Mormon polygamy did not come about because of widowed women who had children who needed looking after, it came about because of the vain lasciviousness of Joseph Smith, Jr. Fannie Alger, age 17, a servant in the Smith household, was Smith’s first plural “wife.” Lucinda Pendleton Morgan Harris, wife of G.W. Harris (living and well!) was his second plural “wife.” Yes, Smith seduced the wives of the men closest to him. Prescindia Huntington Buell, wife of Norman Buell, was his third; Nancy Marinda Johnson Hyde, wife of Orson Hyde, was his fourth, etc.

Joseph Smith, Jr., was no different than the popular evangelical ministers who have “fallen” to the sin of lust today. Only, Joseph Smith, Jr. wrote section 132 of the Doctrine & Covenants to enshrine his filthy, adulterous behaviour and damn any woman, including his devoted wife, Emma Hale Smith, who went against this “prophecy” regarding a man taking virgin, after virgin, after virgin and it not be adulterous. Trouble is, of the 49 wives of Joseph Smith, twelve of them were married women–no virgins there!

Only William Law stood up to Joseph Smith after Mrs. Law reported to her husband how Smith tried to seduce her telling her to keep half her love for her husband and half her love for him. Today’s polyamorists would have a field day with this one.

Smith’s youngest “wife” was 15; his oldest, 59. No wonder Emma Hale Smith refused to follow Brigham Young across the plains to Utah Territory. I’m sure she’d had quite enough of polygamy by the time of Smith’s death.

I just can’t wait to read what the Mormon Defense League has to say about this one!

  10. I’m having a really hard time understanding why one would want to persecute polygamy because some people who believe in multiple marriage partners are abusing children and have in the past (although there is question about any of it happening in the last couple of decades) been “selling” females across the border. We have laws that cover child abuse, spousal abuse, etc. These abusers should simply charged under those laws, it’d be a lot easier to prosecute and make things better for those who do no harm to others. Sadly, groups like this one seem to want to confuse a crime with a style of marriage. Monogamous people abuse children and spouses, too; don’t forget that!

“Persecute” is the wrong word. We are showing how very criminal polygamy itself is, how disingenuous it is (there is always a “favourite”), how harmful it is to women and children. Please read some of the research on this blog: Dr. Steve Kent, Dr. Joseph Henrich, Dr. Rebecca Cook, Dr. Shoshonna Grossberg, Dr. Susan Stickevers, Dr. Marci Hamilton, Dr. Nicholas Bala. Read the new research on a science called “memetics” by John Llewellyn. Do a little more reading: the books that are listed. And, a little more, the affidavits that are listed. Then point your limp finger of “persecution.”

  11. One problem is that the research is always talking about limited forms of polygany, not inclusive of many cultures and relationships (not one I see has any polyandry relationships), nor does it seem to include any of Western society’s polyamorous relationships. And I understand that those tend to be very different than forced marriages. It is clearly biased. It is like much of the spousal abuse literature that conveniently leaves out the facts regarding how often women abuse men (which is statistically about the same as the other way around). Therefore it is hard to give credibility to this research. And calling memetics a science is like calling astrology a science.
