At last, the B.C. government makes the right move on polygamy

Dear Network:

Thank you, Info-Secte, for passing this article along.  You are a valued connection to this campaign!

The email network campaign to Stop Polygamy in Canada is garnering numerous new members mostly from the United States who are watching our campaign to stop the practice of polygamy in Canada with great interest.  The events of dealing with the issue of polygamy of the last ten months which have sent this campaign on a very emotional roller coaster ride are new to the history pages of Canada!  We are back on a high note with the Government of British Columbia (Attorney General  Michael de Jong) and the Federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson working together to uphold the ban against polygamy in this country.

Stay tuned.  I believe the best is yet to come.  We will see the end of the practice of polygamy in Canada and every woman and child will learn about their equality rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  A new day is dawning.  The world is watching!

At last, the B.C. government makes the right move on polygamy

Finally, Canadians might get clarity on whether outlawing polygamy is a justifiable limit on religious freedom.

As early as today, the B.C. government will file a request asking the B.C. Supreme Court to rule on two issues.

– Is the anti-polygamy section of the Criminal Code consistent with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms? If not, in what particular or particulars and to what extent?

– What are the necessary elements of the polygamy offence in the Criminal Code? Does the law require that the polygamous conjugal union involved a minor or occurred in a context of dependence, exploitation, abuse of authority, a gross imbalance of power or undue influence?
